Utilization of carbohydrates by strains of Streptomyces griseus.

The utilization of various carbohydrates by species of streptomyces has been suggested by Pridham and Gottlieb (1948), Kurosawa (1951), and Benedict et al. (1955) as an aid in differentiation of species. While the latter investigators have reported that streptomycin-producing strains of Streptomyces griseus will grow on synthetic agar media containing as sole carbon source mannitol, xylose, fructose, glucose, glycerol, mannose, maltose, lactose, salicin, dextran, cellobiose, or trehalose, they anticipate that related strains may not always utilize the same carbohydrates. It is apparent that significant variation in utilization of carbohydrates by strains within a given species would greatly weaken this characteristic as a tool for identification. We wish to report our observations on three strains derived from a culture of S. griseus which deviate from the parent culture in the utilization of a number of carbohydrates when grown in submerged culture or on agar media.
